Ahundreds of years ago, the imperial family, blinded by greed, attempted to steal the heart of the divine beast, the phoenix. Enraged, the phoenix immolated itself, severing its ties with the mortal world. Since that day, the sun has vanished from the imperial sky. An era began where only the 'red ash', the remains of the divine beast, scattered like snow.

The price of usurpation was brutal.

The imperial bloodline was cursed to pass down a curse that burns the soul from the inside out. In agony as their bodies turned black as charcoal, they perished into ash while still alive before reaching thirty, their short lives ending in the torment of their flesh blackening like charcoal as death approached.

The fear of death festered, transforming into a deeper madness with each generation. Successive emperors became obsessed, scouring the land in search of a way to break this curse and attain eternal life.

Their sole salvation lies in the immortal flower, 'Donghwahwa (同化花)', which blooms from the tears of those chosen by the divine beast but who live hidden among the populace – the 'Hwajong (花種)'.
