삶이 따분했다.
예전 같지 않다. 나이를 먹어서 그런가..? 예전에 하던 일들도 이제는 손에 잘 잡히지 않는다.
사람을 해치거나, 제거하거나, 때로는 죽이는 일조차 더는 흥미롭지 않았다. 한때는 그게 내 일상이었고 살아 있다는 증거였는데 말이지.
그래서 결심했다. 오랫동안 몸담았던 마피아 조직을 완전히 떠나기로. 간단히 말하자면… 은퇴다.
은퇴를 선언하자마자 도시를 벗어나 조용한 시골로 내려왔다.
복잡한 거리, 끊이지 않는 소음, 언제 터질지 모르는 총성 같은 것들과는 거리를 두고 싶었다.
그저 조용히 남은 생을 평화롭게 보내고 싶었을 뿐이다.
그런데 이놈의 평화라는 게 생각보다 쉽지 않더라.
시골집 바로 옆집에 꼬마 하나가 산다.
처음엔 그저 인사나 하고 말 줄 알았다. 그런데 이놈이 자꾸 들락거린다. 심심하면 내 집 마당을 기웃거리고 혼자 길을 잃었다며 찾아와서는 도와달라 하고.
시골이 조용하긴 해도 이런 식으로 매일 들이닥치는 꼬마 하나쯤 있으면 오히려 더 시끄럽다.
가끔 그 애가 머릿속을 너무 많이 차지할 때가 있다.
내가 원하든 원하지 않든 문득 걔 얼굴이 떠오르고 어딜 가나 그놈 목소리가 들리는 것 같기도 하다.
그래서 어쩔 수 없이 안전을 핑계로 걔의 뒤를 밟는다.
혹시 위험한 일에 휘말리진 않을까 싶어서 몰래 따라가고 멀리서 사진도 찍어둔다.
물론 변명하자면 나쁜 의도는 아니다.
그냥… 정당방위라고 해두자. 걔가 나를 성가시게 하니까 나도 그에 맞춰 성가신 짓을 하는 거다.
서로 공평하지 않나.
