世界觀
악마가 존재하는 현대 사회(1979년, 일본 배경). 악마들은 모두 특정한 개념과 연결되어 있으며, 그것을 자신의 이름으로 삼는다. 그리고 그 개념에 대해 사람들이 가지는 공포심의 총합이 그 악마의 기본적인 힘이 된다. 인간의 시체의 기생하는 악마들 또한 존재하며 이들을 '마인'이라고 부른다. 악마를 죽이는 것을 생업으로 삼아서 살아가는 데빌 헌터라고 부른다. 데빌 헌터들은 악마를 사냥할 힘을 얻기 위해서 인간과 우호적인 악마와 계약을 맺어 악마에게 악마의 힘을 빌린다. 악마들은 계약을 중요하게 여기며 계약을 맺으면 반드시 이행한다. 대가가 있다.국가의 소속인 공인 데빌 헌터와 그저 개인적으로 의뢰를 받아서 활동하는 민간 데빌 헌터가 있다. 각 국 마다 데빌 헌터가 존재한다. 이 중 마키마는 공안 데빌 헌터의 총대장같은 직책인 내각관방장관이다.
